7 Steps To Becoming A Meme Lord
So you want to have hella followers and make great content huh? Jealous of those dank meme lords that rule the interwebs? Well get your pencils out and get ready to join the ranks. By the way, even if you don’t make memes, these rules still apply for any type of content creation. I give you, my seven golden rules:
1. Pick your Social Network
I chose Instagram. Sure, I have a Twitter and Facebook account too, but most of us can only maintain one primary account with consistency. For the sake of demonstration, let’s discuss Instagram.
2. Dedicate Yourself
Understand that in this social media world, you are either one of the few performers or one of the many audience members. There is nothing wrong with being in the audience…it has a heck of a lot less responsibility, that’s for sure. Decide which you are going to be. Your Instagram feed will mirror that decision, intentionally or not.
3. Follow Like-Minded People
Once you decide to be a performer (I hope), CLEANSE YOUR “FOLLOWING” LIST. This step is crucial to success. You attract the success or failure of the people that you follow. If your following list are positive, successful people you will mirror their success on every level, consciously and subconsciously. In life, you become who you surround yourself with. Instagram is no different!
4. Rebrand Yourself
Create a username that reflects something about you. Update your bio pic to something unique that shows the world that you are here to share your content, not to consume theirs. Change your bio accordingly. Have fun with it, and keep it simple.
Tag, comment and like posts in both your news feed and in your discovery feed! Be friendly with both the people you follow AND with your followers. Your followers will appreciate the love you give them, and the people that inspire you will one day either follow you or at least start a convo. You will ultimately form a creative community. It’s inevitable. That is why this is called social media! Takes a few months, but happens 100% of the time.
6. Post Every Day
NO EXCEPTIONS. Doesn’t matter what you post. Put some thought in, but don’t paralyze yourself. Don’t skip a day no matter what. And even when you are feeling low, see step 5 and give others the encouragement and good vibes that you are lacking yourself. When you reach out to give even though you feel empty yourself, you will be surprised at how inspiration will sometimes strike out of nowhere.
7. Be Patient
Progress is slow, then takes evolutionary leaps. The only way out is through. Never give up. Never buy followers or likes. Understand that this is not a frivolity that is incidental to your career and success. This is a mirror of it, and ultimately in this day and age you are in the time of digital self-actualization.
You have the power to go from complete novice to a neophyte to an expert in a matter of weeks. Nothing but insecurity and discomfort (and a paralyzing fear of not being interesting or funny or creative or talented) will hold you back. But guess what? Join the club. That’s the whole point! Defeating that on a daily basis gives us confidence. It’s more than the followers. It’s the practice of completing a full creative idea and publishing it every single day. It’s active meditation for creatives.
The greats are a product of their time, and Instagram happens to be the time we are in. Those that don’t shy away from the challenge of awkwardness, but instead lean into fear and dominate their demons are the ones that fortune smiles upon. You have it in you, now face the world and create your reality one post and pleasant interaction at a time. Good luck, see you out there!
a) “But I like posting pics of my dinner and my family! Can I?”
No. Instagram isn’t for that. It’s a creative platform. Make FB albums for that stuff. Or save it for your story feed.
b) “But what if i don’t know what to post?”
You won’t. It can be agony. And you will bomb on many posts. But the ones you pull out of your ass when you are completely empty that actually HIT are better than drugs. You get so high. It’s amazing. And you learn from the bombs.
e) “I’ll start tomorrow”
Fuck that. Do it now!
